This, of all the Chopin nocturnes, is the one I always feel most musically uncertain about, and the one I like least when played by others (and myself). Even Pollini's performance leaves me undecided.

Oh, I feel very much the same way. Bartok made a recording (unfortunately incomplete) that I think is fantastic, however. I liked the idea of including a nocturne (and perhaps this one in particular) in a program with the Hammerklavier - as Samuil Feinberg pointed out in an article (and I guess many others as well), the Adagio Sostenuto (as well as for example the slow movement of the emperor concerto) in some ways hints at the expressive style found in Chopin/Field nocturnes.
