Schubert Impromptus Op 90. No. 2 & 3
on: May 25, 2012, 06:51:53 PM
Had a few "moments un-musical" in the 2nd impromptu. Learned these a long time ago, and using them in a recital program soon. I play the third much better than the 2nd. 1 and 4 coming soon-ish.

No comments anyone? I'm much happier with the third than the second.

Really enjoyed both performances. I do not feel qualified to comment on your playing but I can hear that you have no 3 a little more under control.
I am sure that over time both pieces will mature.
Do you have any tips on how to approach or prepare for learing no 3?
I hope to be able to start working on it in appr. 6 months time.
Best wishes and good luck with your performance.

I also like much more how you play no. 3! It's much more musically played, to me, there's more emotion in it.
I think both pieces are not only wonderful music but also really good etudes, but to me the "etude" aspect is a bit too dominant in your interpretation of No. 2. You have very good fingers! But it sounds a bit too much like a Czerny Etude, mere velocity, very nice, pleasing and fluent, but you don't communicate the deep musical content. I think your interpretation could grow significantly if you work towards having a more emotional relationship with this piece.

My daughter struggled with n. 2 about an year ago (probably she was not ready for it). I can say for sure thas she would kill to play this piece with your fluency and confidence!!!!!

Pianowolfi, I definitely agree about my 2nd impromptu being mechanical. Honestly, I loathed the piece for the longest time, before I even ever sat down to learn it. Of the 4 impromptus in Op 90, it is by far my least favorite.
All the same, I'm struggling with connecting to the piece musically. To me, the emotional content of the 3rd impromptu is immediately clear, while I really only understand the 2nd on an intellectual level (harmony, form etc...)
Gruszynski, the most difficult part of the piece is really "layering" the sound, being able to really keep the middle voice under the top voice. It can sound like rocks in a laundry machine if you don't. Really, just listening to yourself carefully and constantly striving for separation of the voices is the best thing you can do.
Also, the recording is somewhat monotonous. These were both recorded on my phone...
