Need help for teenage student
on: June 01, 2012, 02:48:35 PM
Basically the case is that I've got 3 lessons a week with students from my conservatoire who can't afford regular lessons with an approved professor and are beginners who must get the first 2 degrees in piano in order to get the highest degrees in the other instruments they're playing(including vocals)(stupid system i know :P)I basically get the 70% of the regular tuition costs, around 30e an hour and get some experience. Now one of my students claims that she can't study piano more than 2 hours a week, and I short of believe her but this time will not be enough for her to successfully pass the exam(note that saying 1st and 2nd degree actually translates to 3rd degree pieces in the first year and 4th in the second).Anyway should I pressure her to find more time or should I try to make do with this time she's got to offer?
Thanks in advance.

Basically I'd be pretty blunt and say that she needs to do more than that if she's to reach the standard she needs to pass the exams, which she needs to do to pass for her preferred instrument. After that, it's up to her.

In this society, kindness is all too often punished, so if this doesn't work out well (the student fails), then YOU'll get the blame. I don't think that's a very good option for career planning.
