Least challenging Scriabin sonata?
on: June 03, 2012, 03:18:31 AM
I'm thinking of trying out one of his later sonatas because I really wanna experience the terror of his sonatas! The first few times I listened to the 6th, 7th, and 9th ones, I had to look over my shoulder every few minutes! It's like being in a horror movie!
I know the 7th one is out of the question, because that's like harder than Scarbo, and the 5th one is too romantic. I know all of themmusic difficult, but which one is the least challenging? The 9th?

I remember reading a thread a while back where Koji had ranked all 10. If my memory serves me correctly, he placed the final 6 as so:
Least to most difficult
9, 10, 5, 6, 7, 8
I would mostly agree with this. Judging on a few reading-throughts I might switch 5 and 6. Then again, my opinion probably doesn't matter that much...

Having never played any of the sonatas but studied the scores and many recordings, that list seems to be what I estimated as well. The 8th is perhaps the one I like the most (and a friend of mine played the hell out of this monstrous piece), but it does seem a bit beyond reach, and Koji has mentioned previously that it doesn´t fare very well with the audience in general.
