How to salvage a smoke damaged piano
on: June 06, 2012, 02:38:43 AM
I acquired a piano(1976 Sohmer) with smoke damage. It still  plays well minus a few off notes and the occasional stuck key(it had these problems before the fire).

My question is this... Should I bag it and ozone it for a few day's to save it from the acidity of the smoke, or can I just clean the exterior, vacuum/blow from what I can from the interior and if the piano can survive a year or so without falling apart, then have it restrung, refelted, tuned and later even worry about having it re-keyed and re-finished? It's been about a month since the fire and there is a fair amount of soot, especially on the outside.

I guess the main point of my question is if I am trying to save it even though I know it would be cheaper to buy a used piano, what is the best way to go about restoring it?

TIA!

I looked into this a while ago (was thinking of buying a smoke-damaged but almost new M & H): the guy you want to talk to is Dave Swartz, an RPT in Minnesota. You may have to dig around the Internet for his phone/website, but he's super knowledgeable and friendly. He's become an expert in this field for some strange reason...

Good luck,

Glenn

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Contacted Dave like everybody suggested. He seems to really know his stuff and has given me a fair amount of advice on what to do and what not to do to take care of the damage.

Dave's advice worked for me. He knows all deeply and perfectly. I had issue with my guitar that got damaged due to smoke.
