I'm confused about Natural signs
on: June 06, 2012, 03:56:47 AM
What confuses me is that why is there natural signs when their is nothing to cancel even if there is no time signature or even at the beginning of the measure when no sharps or flat is applied on the same note? If you guys could answer that question, may you guys explain more about natural signs?

If there's truly nothing to cancel, then there shouldn't be a natural sign.  Perhaps it would be helpful if you could post a picture of the passage you are thinking of, including the previous few bars.

You will see that in some measures there are natural signs which I don't understand why there is a natural sign when no previous accidental was applied.

I can't see the pic; apparently you need to be logged into that site (as you) in order to see it.  Can you attacg (either as jpg or pdf) as an attachment here.  To do that, you need to use the "additional Options" but under the white type in box and to the left.

I don't think there is any deep secret usage of naturals here. Just imagine. You come out a key with 5 flats while sight-reading. The composer/arranger was obviously concerned that the pianist may still have all those flats in his mind. He may have tested the piece on people. If most made mistakes there, then he may have felt he should make it explicitly clear that the naturals are intended as written.

Oh, so what you mean is that some pianists might still apply the flat/sharp signs even if it is in a new measure?

As has been said, it doesn't mean anything much. It's just a helpful reminder.

Yep, the naturals in bar 159 are "courtesy" naturals, because those notes were flattened in the previous bar and, as Paul says, it's nice to be reminded to turn them off.
