failed grade 8 piano exam
on: June 11, 2012, 04:39:55 PM
I failed my grade 8 ABRSM piano exam with a quite low mark-92 but i was expecting i will pass because i passed with distinction in grade 7 exam.I'm 17 and i'm sitting for final exam in secondary school and don't know whether i should resit my exam. What should i do now? I'm chinese-sorry for my poor english- i think it is one of the reason i failed my exam because i don't really understand what the examiner wants in aural test and can't answer well.  :'(

I would say plan to resit the exam.  But... first, take your time.  Unless there is some urgent reason to hurry, I feel it would be better if you waited a while -- say a month or so.  Make sure your playing is free and relaxed; that is practice -- of course! -- but don't overdo it.  And especially, if you feel that you had problems understanding what was wanted, or making yourself understood, see if you can get some coaching in that area.  It could make a big difference.

Unless you know why you failed, there's no point in re-sitting the exam.  Do you have a teacher you can discuss this with?  Otherwise, do you know what areas let you down?

The aural is quite tough.  You can buy practice material.  You'll also have a mark sheet that shows how well you did in each section of the exam.

in order to mpast g8, you need pass all sections, the aural section is the hardest part, and this takes time to train up. You need to have an aural drill every day to master it. ;)

Stop with your tripe mahila... That wouldn't help you pass Grade 1, yet alone Grade 8.

Stop peddling this crap you moron. That stuff won't help anyone - and it's not the first time some idiots tried to advertise it here.

Don't you have the option of skipping aural for musicianship -this is much more interesting imho =aural is really boring -
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

You only meant to advertise??? That's my point. And considering that I've seen that site advertised 3 different times in the last year by other various users who simply signed up just to post advertise it, don't lecture me and tell me it might be a good source of help anyone. You posted the exact same message 3 times in 5 minutes. And you've done it yet again in another thread.

And I was in my limits with my language... believe me - I've exceeded those limits many times in the past because of spammers like you. If you don't have anything decent to contribute to this forum, then I think it's best you stop using it as a pin up board for your crap.

I'm sure hy_r doesn't appreciate your self-deprecating crap either.

Don't give up. The ABRSM exam is scored based on different elements of the test. You know which part(s) of the test you are lacking in.  Work on those, while maintaining or improving the other elements.
If you do not understand the examiner, just politely ask him or her to repeat, or say it again. They are well-trained, and they know there are possible language problems. When you do not ask or respond, then they would assume that you understand what is being said. Prepare well, and you will be fine. You had done well before in your Grade 7.

Changing teacher may or may not help you, depending on how you are trained in your aural test. Grade 8 aural is difficult and needs to be done regularly. I am not sure how your teacher trains you and his/her students in aural. Aural is best done apart from lesson time. Does your teacher do any aural classes? The teacher can group all equivalent level students and conduct weekly aural classes. If your current teacher does not do that, then you may want to find out if any other teacher is doing group aural. Personally I think aural is one element of the test that is quite difficult to study by yourself, since it is an interactive part of the test.
If money is not an issue, and if your current teacher is not doing any group class, you can pay him/her for some extra aural class? (Even though, personally I think aural training classes should be covered as part of your piano study and tuition).
Good luck!
