I Want to play again
on: June 17, 2012, 04:25:10 PM
Hello everybody,

When I was young, about 10 years old, I started playing the piano. I went to a music school and learn all the basics (It was 4 years). After that, I did 3 more years of the school. In total, I played 5-6 years of piano (at the school that is).

I was young and of course I didn't had time to practice a lot. Now, I'm older (21) and I want to play the piano again. It's not that I ever stopped, I play piano like every week, but only the pieces that I know. When I want to learn a new piece, I study it, but only the 'easy part' because I don't think I can handle the hard parts =P.

At this moment, I'm learning the main theme of Game Of Thrones, I love it. Beautiful piece. But for example, sometimes I need to go very fast from a note, to another note an octave lower, and back. I'm not that good at that.. and there are a lot of other things I need to study again.

That's why I'm coming here. I'm just looking for tips, maybe some pieces you guys recommend to 'start with', or exercises I need to do. (I Don't think I want to go to piano lessons again, should I do that?). Also, my piano is like 20 years old. I Want to buy a new one (for a long time now), any good models? I'm thinking about this Yamaha P-155.

Thank you very much.

If I were you, I'd go for lessons again. You'll probably find it a better experience than you did when you were younger, and it's really the quickest way to get you on track.

As for the new piano, check out the Instruments forum here for discussion on the relative merits of various pianos.

You should evaluate the actual level of the pieces that you can play.
Here, in pianostreet.com you can find the estimated level of the best piano pieces.

Then, you can plan your learning process selecting pieces of your favourite composers, between the range of levels that you want to achieve.

If you want to be autodidact, maybe you should read books, watch videos,  and follow threads in these forums about how to practice, how to memorize, how to track your progress, etc.
