Beethoven op. 106

Hallo together,

Maestro Beethoven has allegedly submitted the speed of his Hammerklaviersonata first movement with 138.

In my opinion this is too fast. The beauty of some parts of the first movement cannot come out.

What do you think of this speed. Most of pianists can not realise it, and in the lyrical parts it sounds funny.

Could it be, that there was a mistake with Beethoven´s metronome, or gave he this direction in the moment of a bad mood.

I quite often find Beethoven's metronome marks too fast, and there is a body of evidence he did too. Not everyone agrees, though.

Play it at the speed you think works best musically and hang the critics.
