mp3 playback control not appearing in Firefox
on: June 23, 2012, 12:11:50 AM
The playback controls for mp3's in the Audition Room are not appearing in Firefox.  They are definably there, because I can click around the black space and get them to work, but there are no graphics.  They appear in IE, however i do not wish to use that browser.

Using Firefox 13.0.1, Flash 11.3.300.262, Windows 7.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

hmm have you updated flash? i'm not super sure if that'll work but if it were me it'd be amongst the first places i try, especially since it seems they update the blasted thing about 1x per week sometimes.

Flash Player cannot open .mp3.

I don't think it has to do with the update status of any of the media players. Probably just one of those nuisances of the open-source browser itself that doesn't seem to cooperate with the forum software or a more general "objects" issue. I have everything updated, and I have the same symptoms, but part of it may be choice; I use blocking software extensively. [Embedded] Flash clips, for example, are allowed only if they come from youtube, but if they were posted on googleapsis.com or any other third-party server, then I take the decision per file, depending on the user who posted. If it's a bot, then you may be in for very nasty surprises, leading to infection of the computer, etc.

When you click on an .mp3 link shown in the image, firefox will ask the user what to do. If you click "Save", then the object will be saved to the place indicated in your settings (in my case "Desktop"). If you click "Open", then the default player for .mp3 files will appear (in my case that's VLan Player) that first downloads the file into cache and then opens it. Very inconvenient, of course. I guess Mozilla will get reports about it soon and issue yet another of its many updates.

quantum,

Do you use stuff like NoScript or other blockers? I just tried in Firefox 13.1. Said buttons appear when you allow scripts for pianostreet.com. You can leave scripts for third parties blocked.

Also, try uninstalling Real Player if it's on your machine.  I tried this a couple days ago as I was having problems on Firefox with any interface that was imbedded.  Of course, then you wouldn't have Real Player, unfortunately, but it certainly beats not being able to use half the internet.

Flash is updated to the latest version as of this writing.  I too suspect it has something to do with Flash, as these controls seem to be Flash objects.

I'm running Ad Block Plus.  Completely disabled it and all other add-ons to test if they were the culprit.  No change in behavior.

To my knowledge Real Player is not installed.  I am using VLC 2.0.1 as a media player.

It seems PS is not the only site exhibiting these problems.  Places such as thefreedictionary.com that use auditory pronunciation for words also have missing play controls.  Here is an example

I think I misunderstood your problem the first time. The problem seems to be indeed in Flash Player, and most probably in its new "Protected Mode" that causes trouble in Firefox:
* Either some content does not appear
* Or Flash Player crashes.

Here are some steps you'd like to consider trying:

P.S.: Please keep in mind that editing the mms.cfg file (last resort) is a bit tricky on Vista and Win7. Even if you are an administrator on your computer, you won't be allowed to do it. The right way is to richt-click on Notepad (It's in the start menu) and launch it "As Administrator" (that's the inbuilt administrator), locate the file, then edit it. If your system is 64-bit, then the mms.cfg file in the regular (32-bit) Program Files folder will most probably have to be created additionally (Firefox is 32-bit). First you create an mms.txt file on your desktop and write the indicated setting + save; then you rename the file to the mms.cfg extension and drop it in the folder indicated. For the renaming to happen correctly, you also have to edit the Folder Options ("Unhide registered file extensions"), otherwise the file will have two extensions (.cfg.txt) and the setting won't work. Also, for changes to be implemented, you'll have to reboot your system. Good luck.
P.S.: Before editing, close the browser first.
