Bad day song?
on: June 27, 2012, 02:12:43 AM
Does anyone have a piece that they just love to play when they had a bad day? Something that either makes you feel better or somehow seems to just express how you're feeling? For me, it's Schubert serenade. Its a song I could probably play in my sleep, and Ive played it forever. It reminds me of home, of my family. It was my moms favorite piece, and she must have played it a million times when I was growing up. I learned to play it in secret, and she cried when she heard that i learned it. Takes me back to a better time. So what is yours?

Prokofiev Visions fugitives Op.22 No. 1 and 2 or Chopin Nocturne Op.27 No. 2 when i want to hang onto that feeling of having a bad day.

When I want to make it better, Brahms Intermezzo Op. 118 No. 2.

Sometimes when i don't feel like putting any thought into my playing what so ever, i'll play c diminished followed by g diminished chords arpeggiated going all the way up and down, never lifting the sustain pedal,
lets everything out.  ;)

Although Feldman's Palais de Mari doesn't do much to help me feel better, it's one of my most common retreats and takes my mind off whatever's bugging me for a solid thirty minutes.

Some epic pieces.  It makes me feel more badass, and that I have actually put effort into something.  I'm working on some Rachmaninoff now, and the first two pages of the Bb major prelude lifts my spirits like mad.  It's so grand sounding, and I can't think of a piece in Bb major that I've played in the last 3-4 years.  It's just so refreshing, so satisfying, and it's just a giant wall of awesome sound.  It gives me butterflies.

If I'm upset I'll play that. OR the last minute of the Debussy "l'Isle Joyeuse".  Sustained piano bass octaves with some beautiful melodic work, with tons of accomp filler is just such a perfect way to be like "ahhhhhh...yaaaaaaa that's the stuff".  Musical morphene if I'm feeling upset.

Late night posts from me are getting less and less coherent.  But now I just can't wait till tomorrow when I can play some more Debussy!!!

...playing an upset piece while upset seems a bit counter intuitive... but also, playing an upset piece while happy seems even worse  ;)

I like to improvise in such situations.  Certain moods can produce some interesting music at times.

I like to sight read some new (to me) fugues, preferably baroque. I find it strangely calming and relaxing. Running out, though.  New to me currently are the Pachelbel Fugues on the Magnificat - absolutely gorgeous!

I usually turn to sad songs, not angry.
Moonlight sonata was my go-to song last year during depression, and playing the second movement of Pathetique in the dark is amazingly soothing. Also Chanson Triste and Milonga del Angel from the Grade 8 book. And anything Chopin really, particularly his Nocturne in e minor.
Currently working on:
Bach Prelude and Fugue 13
Mozart Sonate in E flat Major, KV 282
Chopin Nocturne in E Minor Op 72, No. 1
Gershwin Rialto Ripples
Bolcom Graceful Ghost Rag

Anything classical will do for me :) and I love listening to and playing it whether it's a bad day, an average one, an extraordinary one, an extraordinarily lousy one, etc, etc, etc ^^  ;D but well, some of the recent ones I've listened to in bad days have been (not all of them actual songs, though):

-Chopin's 'Harp' Étude Op.25 No.1
-Pachelbel's Fugues on the Magnificat (yes, I definitely agree with you, jmenz, just astoundingly gorgeous, those!  ;) )
-Schubert's 'Die Forelle' D.550
-Chopin's 'Czary' from his 19 Polish songs Op.74
-The lass of Glenshee
-Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2, first movement
-Massenet's 'Sous les tilleuls' from his 'Scènes Alsaciennes'
-Schumann's 'Vanitas vanitatum' from his 'Fünf Stücke im Volkston' Op.102, as well as his 'Langsam' from the same work

Best regards, 8)

Chopin's Nocturne op 9 no 2 really cheers me up. I have a lot of happy memories from learning that piece. Playing it makes me forget the bad day.

Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue No.24 in D minor. To me it's like heavy metal without having to damage my vocal chords. It also kinda cheers me up because I feel good about playing it...

Funny. Makes you feel "bad-ass". Well, my bad mood pieces are Ravel's Scarbo, and Rachmaninoff's Concertos (#'s 1, 2, 3, and 4)

Ravel's Pavane is good for that purpose.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3
