Need some input on Undergrad Audition Rep
on: June 30, 2012, 09:31:48 AM
Hi everybody. I'm going to be applying to a few universities and conservatories this coming year, and I would like to have some input on my program.

Bach P/F: Prelude And Fugue Book 1 No. 4 C# Minor
Beethoven / Schubert / Mozart / Haydn Sonata: Beethoven Sonata No. 4 Op. 7 / Schubert D. 959 (What do you think about an undergrad auditioning with late Schubert?)
Major romantic work: Mendelssohn Fantasy Op. 28 / Schumann Symphonic Etudes / Chopin Sonata no. 3
20th Century Work: Ravel Le Tombeau De Couperin / Bartok Sonata (1926)
Virtuosic Etude: Chopin Etude Op 25 no. 6 / Rachmaninoff Etude Tableaux Op 39 no. 3 / Scriabin Etude op. 65 no. 1

This is subject to change as auditions are next year. Most of this is in my current Rep besides the Scriabin Etude, Symphonic Etudes, and the Beethoven sonata. Thank you in advance for your comments

I wouldn't go for the Symphonic etudes. You would have to play the whole thing to show what you can do.
Anyway, if your applying for Bachelor, it's an impressive program.

Thanks for the advice, I was a bit hesitant on using the Symphonic etudes anyways.

I still wonder if it's a great idea to play the Schubert wherever they accept Schubert sonatas for the classical sonata requirement. Is playing late Schubert as taboo as playing late Beethoven for an audition?

I don't know that they are so much "taboo" as overly ambitious.  These are extremely complex works (though Beethoven moreso than Schubert), requiring considerable musical and personal maturity. Not many undergrads can claim to have both of these, and it shows a lack of self awareness to attempt them (in performance).

That said, if you can truly pull them off, the world's your oyster.

I think the ravel you have is an awesome idea, I used jeux d'eau for my own audition, ravel is a great way to showcase, the Scriabin stuff is cool too, honestly if you can, I never hear the little red riding hood étude by rach, don't know the opus number. They like to see things that aren't really seen that often.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
