Khachaturian Toccata? Overplayed?
on: July 14, 2012, 12:06:44 AM
I hear it's overplayed. Except I've only heard the whole thing once in my life and have only seen it 3 times on recital programs of the hundreds I've seen.

Brahms 118/2
Liszt Concerto 1
Rachmaninoff/Kreisler Liebesleid

Okay? What exactly are you trying to say? I've played it. I don't know if it's overplayed. I hadn't heard of it until I played it, then again, I wasn't really that interested in music at that point so that doesn't mean much.

I personally don't think its overplayed. It is a great piece of music IMO and I think it deserves its recognition. I just wish people performed some of his other, more obscure works a little more. The Toccata is the only solo piano piece of his that I ever really hear people play.

I'm asking if it really is overplayed. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I actually didn't find it that interesting, but that's opinion I suppose. I'm told it's overplayed, but I just found that weird considering I hardly see people playing it.

If it's been played once, it's been overplayed.  Lazy writing of the highest order.

If Khachaturian's Toccatta is overplayed then there is very little in the repertoire that isn't.

I played this piece as part of my audition into University (many moons ago)... a great piece and not as difficult as it sounds.  The middle section is a rhythmic challenge because the left and right hands are often not on the levee..

As far as being overplayed... I don't believe so.  I've judged a few piano competitions and I've rarely heard it played.  However, it's a crowd pleaser when it is played.

I'd say go for it.  ;D

I have zero interest in playing the piece. Sorry. I was just wondering if it was overplayed since I never hear it.

haha.. yes I realized that after I posted the thread.  Like I said, I haven't heard it that often but I agree with one of the earlier posts... it's definitely played more often than any of Khachaturian's other piano music.  I don't know if that means it's overplayed per se.

It's a fun piece....people enjoy hearing it. Learns quickly. I enjoy playing and teaching this piece.
