Brahms Rhapsody Op 79 No 1
on: July 16, 2012, 08:27:04 PM
I played this piece a while ago, but I have heard quite a few different opinions on this tempo. I'm curious to know what you guys think it. Is it too fast?
And any other comments are welcome too!
Thanks!
Sorry about the lack of video. I recorded the audio a while ago, and uploaded it to youtube. I have no idea where the original audio file went...

The sequence at 1:48 reminds me of the last bars of Chopin ballade #1. Couldn't say if the tempo is too fast, never listened to it before. It's beautifully played I like it!

Hi kc,
I've played the other two Brahms rhapsodies, but not this one, although I'm well familiar with it. Regarding your question on tempo, Brahms leaves it a bit vague by marking the piece Agitato which, of course, refers to a mood rather than a tempo per se. However, aside from the serene, Shubertian trio section that appears a couple of times (which in fleeting moments reminds me of the Op. 10 Ballades), the agitato mood certainly embodies fire and passion, which you convey very well in your playing. I also believe that it is within the bounds of performance practices. So I would suggest that you leave your tempo as is.
Overall, I believe that you played the rhapsody in a most artistic and convincing way. Congratulations of your fine rendition.
