Improv in the Key of Gb Major "Nocturne"
on: July 17, 2012, 05:01:24 PM
Hello all! I'm Dan and this is my first post here. I thought I'm delighted to find out that there is a section on this site dedicated to improvs because that is the thing I feel the best doing (though I love repertoire as well). Anyway, I'm currently teetering on the fence of intermediate and advance. I'd consider myself a piano addict. I'm studying music in community college as a major, but reconsidering it. I'm glad this forum appreciates piano improvs because I can't seem to find a lot of that around. Anyway, I hope you'll give some feedback on it.

I know there are few thing I get carried away on, such as runs. It's not that I'm showing, but I just have a hard time holding back from them after a while. This improv was done a few weeks ago. I have others, but this is my favorite. It's a melody that just came to me based off of one that I composed. I played with a lot of phrasing. Anyway, I look forward to listening to some improvs that other members have posted.
Have a nice day!
-Dan

Wow, I really enjoyed this improv! The runs that you mentioned don't come across as show-offish, they just convey a great enthusiasm for what you're doing.

I liked the way that the main theme starts of very formally, but then you free things up, introduce the runs. Each re-iteration of the main theme is slightly less formal than the first, but they still hold the music together while allowing a lot of freedom.

I'm looking forward to hearing more. :)

Hi dan, welcome to the forum

There are some good ideas in here, sometimes, i feel the execution could have been better, almost as though you were at times stuck as to where to go. This will change the more improvisation that you do.
There are, at times, some beautiful changes. The runs you perform are sometimes a little dramatic (but that is sometimes good :)) however when doing the runs, try and avoid holding the pedal down the whole time.

Alot of really nice stuff here tho, please continue to post more
