question about beethoven pathetique sonata
on: July 17, 2012, 08:04:43 PM
at measure 11 the allegro di molt e con brio, in the bass clef  there are 8 8th notes then in measure 12, 4 hollowed out 8th notes. I have never come across this before and sadly i cannot tell what exactly people are doing in recordings of this.

how is this played and how is it counted?

Hello kclee6337, this is a great question and I'm also studying this brilliant piece by Beethoven. Each of the "hollowed out 8th notes" equals two eighth notes. So, in each MEASURE, you count:
1 + 2 + for the first PAIR of "hollowed out 8th notes", and 3 + 4 + for the second pair of "hollowed eighth notes". Hope this helps! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hmm... I don't know what "shorthand" is, but each measure in the bass basically has 8 8th notes, so basically, it's 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +.

And by the way, I don't know it says this in your edition, but in the first measure of the "Allegro di molto e con brio", does it have all the eight notes written down? Because if it does, then the measures following it are the same thing. Hope this clears things up :).
