Questions about Rachmaninoff Pieces
on: July 20, 2012, 10:22:07 PM
Hi, I have a list of Rachmaninoff pieces:

Prelude Op.3 No.2
Moment Musicaux Op.16 No.4
Prelude Op.23 No.2
Prelude Op.23 No.5
Prelude Op.32 No.5
Flight of the Bumblebee (originally by Rimsky-Korsakov, but I'm talking about the piano transcription by Rachmaninoff)

Can anyone rate these pieces from easiest to hardest and tell me which is their favorite from the list? Thanks! ;D
Bach Prelude and Fugue BWV848
Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.13
Chopin Etude Op.10 No.4
Chopin Scherzo Op.31
Mussorgsky "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition

My favorite is Op. 16 No. 4

I can't really rank them from least to hardest because that's subjective.

BUT if I had to separate them in two groups, it would be like this:

Easier set
Op. 3 No. 2
Op. 32 No. 5
op. 23 No. 5

Harder set:
Mment musical 4
Flight of the bumblebee
Op 23 no 2

That wasn't in order by the way.

Favourite?  I would have to say the 32/5

As rachmaninoff_forever said, difficulty is subjective.  However, from a purely technical position, I'd say:

Easiest - Hardest:
Op 3/2
Op 32/5
Bumblebee Transcription
Moments Musicaux 4
I believe op 23/5 and op 23/2 can both be attributed as the hardest, but it depends on your left-hand technique.  I would personally place op 23/2 as the hardest.
