I don't understand "Mordent" very well? :S
on: July 30, 2012, 04:05:38 PM
I'm having problems reproducing what this symbol means, I've read the description in wikipedia and some other places, but it seems the recording of a piece I'm learning is still different from what I'm making (the version recorded is the same), maybe I'm not listening very well? This seems to be so simple, yet I can't reproduce the same sound.

Can somebody please give an in depth explanation of what this is? I feel that the descriptions I've read aren't deep enough, or maybe too complicated for my english.

Thanks!

It's a sort of ornamentation used in older, baroque keyboard music.

Look here : https://gc-music.com/Ornament.htm
it might help. I on't know.

It's like a little trill thing you do to make it sound cool.

It's just a 4 note trill starting one note higher than the designation..

I don't know for sure if this is true or not, but a Bach PhD told me once that he actually used that scratch mark for all of his ornamentations... he doesn't distinguish between any of the variations. Meaning, that it doesn't really matter what you do, as long as you use some sort of "baroque" style ornamentation.  That is completely unsupported though.  So, it's probably safer to follow the accepted literature on baroque ornamentation.

Also,  there is usually some sort of a "key" at the beginning of every volume of Bach that indicates the different ornamentations.
