Ideas for performance pieces?
on: August 01, 2012, 07:56:55 AM
Hi everyone!

I am an intermediate level pianist, working on level 8 RCM.  In my lessons my teacher mostly has me play studies or extremely short pieces. Which is great for working on technique, but later this year I plan on playing piano in the lobby of a local hospital, so I need pieces that I can play for people. Pieces that sound good and people want to listen to, if you know what I mean. So, suggestions? I was thinking I possibly playing some yiruma. Any other ideas?Any suggestions help.  Thank you!

You do not mention the conditions, I do not know if people will be coming in and out, but if I were called on to do this one piece I would be likely to choose is Grieg's romantic mock or neo baroque Holberg Suite.  It has lovely colouring and the movements are very well balanced and apart from ornaments on some big chords not really difficult.

Sorry. It's a hospital lobby do people will be coming in and out. I guess it's not really a performance then exactly... But I've never played for strangers before so it is for me. Haha.

Hamelin, definitely. But I'm not quite sure I really like how effortless and flawless some pianists are; I find it almost boring! I mean, we always want to hear people, professional or amateur, succeed, but I find a performance much more engaging when the artist at least looks a little a bit struggling.  Occasionally, in some pieces, i'll find that I even kinda of like it when, in some of the "grittier" pieces, the artists make some small note errors (accidentally of course) because it makes them and their performance more real to me. Just my opinion  :)

Satie's Gymnopedies are very easy technically and sound really good, so if you're looking to fill more time, playing the 3 of them would really help. In a hospital lobby, you really don't want anything too flashy or exciting...some Grieg lyric pieces would work, perhaps. If you know any jazz, that's a common thing when someone is playing piano for background noise. A set of pieces 49410enrique recommended, Sailing to the World, from a video game, has music that I think would work well for background music.
