I need Bach!
on: February 02, 2003, 05:41:10 PM
Hey people,

I want a good, fairly long, beautiful Bach piece, since I only play Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Chopin.... I need "early classical" stuff, and, well, I'm not too fond of Bach.  Any suggestions?  I NEED A BACH PIECE!!!

Thx,
Martin

Does the Bach-Busoni Chaconne count? ;)

I haven't ever played a long Bach peice, although there are several beautiful Preludes and Fuges

Have you ever thought about Bach's "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue"? It's around 13 minutes long. It's not early classical, but totally baroque...

You might try Prelude and Fugue no. 2 in C minor, BWV 847 from Well-Tempered Clavier part 1.
Or you can play his Goldberg Variations, BWV 988.

does it have to be long? my friend is a Bach fan, she plays a lot of his compositions. have you given Toccata & Fugue in D Minor a try?

If you still don't, listen to these and that should do it :

If after listening all these, you don't like Bach, then there's something wrong with your ears. Consult your doctor.

Was this a rhetorical comment, or did you mean it literally?  However great a composer may be, surely it is possible for some people, even musically informed ones, not to be especially drawn to their music, just because of the huge variability of human tastes?

Questions are rhetorical, comments not so much, and the opposite of literally is figuratively, not rhetorically in any case.

BTW, I think he actually meant it amusingly. ::)

But of course... I'm not the greatest fan of Schoenberg, but who am I to criticize someone I don't understand?

I've seen that you guys gave him some excellent choices, but he could also learn the first contrapunctus from the art of fugue.
