SLEEP!
on: October 08, 2004, 08:49:22 AM
3 questions:

1. What time do you go to bed at?

2. Approximately how long does it take you to fall asleep? (guess if you have to)

3. What time can your body naturally wake up sans alarm clock?

I'm asking this because I'm sleep deprived.  It's not so much that your posts will cure me, it's just more postings to know you people a tad bit more.  I'm a very curious kitchen utensil you see.

(yes, spatulas need to sleep)

generally between 10 and 12 these days, takes me a while to get to sleep though, highly annoying. but how long that is depends on how much i have on my mind, i think the max is about 2-3hrs.
i tend to naturally wake up around 8.30-9ish, damn uni for making me have to wake up earlier!

I agree.

We tough guys tend to get tired though. ;)

So doing a head stand for one hour makes up for 8 hours sleep.

(disclaimer: don’t try this without expert coaching to make sure you are doing it right, and start with 5 minutes increasing slowly until you get to one hour – should take a year).

Best wishes,

Umm... it's 4:11AM here.  I'm sleep deprived.  I have lessons later at 10:30AM.  So pardon my lack of brain use typing but are you just kidding about standing on my head?  Cause that would hurt.  But I fixed my C key using some great ideas from the forum albeit at the sacrifice of the last letter of the alphabet.

So to stay awake, I should stand on my head, is that correct?

I fall asleep in seconds

go to bed between 10 and 12 depending on the mood

I can suggest a time in my mind and wake up within minutes of that time without an alarm clock.

6 - 7 hours is about what I need

Bernhard, I think you forgot to put the smiley faceafter the part about standing on your head.  If not, would it be ok if I hang upside down instead?-like, strap my feet to a chin up bar?

can you please explain how having blood rush to your head replaces sleep? or, just add the smiley face..

Sleep at 11:00 or 11:30.
Usually takes ten minutes to fall asleep.
Wake between 5:00 and 5:30.

By the way, I'm short.  :-/ :P

That's odd.  Usually if I am excited or anxious about stuff happening the next day, I find it impossible to sleep.  I usually try to think about nothing which is amazingly difficult to do.

Well, the majority of the time, I daydream (oxymoron!) at night before I sleep, so it's mostly desires and such. That shouldn't be too hard to fall asleep to.

I go to sleep from about 10:00pm to the max 3:00 am....depending on my day and if I have school or not the next day....
I listen to my CD player at night for about 30minutes in my bed (secretely...I once listened to the entire Rite of Spring in pitch black...and no....I didn't fall asleep in the middle of it). After that it doesn't take long for me to fall asleep....maybe about 5-10 minutes I think.
I ussualy wake up from 6:30a.m. (the nights I go to sleep at 10:00) and maybe Noon if I went to bed late (or actually early in the morning if you want to get technical).

I kid you not.

You don’t actually stand on your head, you stand on a triangle formed by your elbows and your clasped hands. If done properly there is surprisingly little weigh on the head (the crown of the head just touches the floor, most of the skull is supported by the clasped hands), and the neck is reasonably free.

Get a good yoga teacher to show you the posture (the technical name is “Salamba sirsasana”). You can try learning it from a book (B.K.S. Yiengar’s “light on Yoga” is the bible) but I wouldn’t recommend it.

There is much more to it than simply blood rushing to the head. There are other physiological effects and many psychological and metaphysical ones. The effort in balancing and holding the body in position is fundamental, so just hanging from the ceiling upside down (or lying on an inclined bed head down) will not work. You have to actually and actively do the head stand.

Doing a headstand for one hour is analogous (notice: analogous, not equivalent) to running a marathon. You will not be able to do it tomorrow if you have never run before. You need to train and build up to it. It can take 1 – 2 years (so, Faulty I guess it is not going to be very helpful for today ;)). You must start by learning how to do it. Some people learn in 10 –15 minutes, others never learn. Some take years. Once you can do it, then you must steadily increase the time every week a few more minutes.

This is ultimately dangerous stuff. You do not want to do it wrongly (the resulting injuries can be pretty nasty – with the neck area being involved and all).

Take care.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Rest, rest, perturbed spirit. Sorry for being rude here:
Bernhard does and as a result he writes posts like the one above!  ;D ;D ;D
It is the guilty conscience. Standing on your head is possible with a guilty conscience, while sleeping becomes hard. ;D

Come on people, enjoy your sleep. To sleep, perchance to dream. For in THAT sleep what dreams may come (must give us pause)...
Who is going to have any nice piano-playing dreams worthy of being reported on this forum if you all stand on your heads?  ;)

p.s. to answer your questions, Spatula: 9 hours sleep would be my ideal, anything less than 4.5h is really unpleasant. Can wake up w/o alarm clock at pretty much any time, if it is important. Would hen try to go to bed so that time available is a multiple of 1.5h (sleep cycle).

1. 10 PM to 1 AM

2. Approxately 30 minutes to an hour to get from stage 1 sleep into stage 2 sleep

3. 8:30 will be my natural waking time, assuming I sleept at 11 PM the night before.

In the late 1950’s scientists (mostly from McGill University) did a lot of studies in sleep deprivation. One of the experiments involved operating on cat’s brains so that they would not sleep. After a couple of weeks they died. :'(

It is true that they were not doing headstands to compensate, but I would not extrapolate here. The head stand is a good idea to refresh yourself if you loose a night’s sleep now and then. There is no suggestion from me that you should turn it into a life style. ;)

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Without sleep(actually REM sleep or dreaming) the average brain goes insane.

I am pretty sure the brain doesn't need 7 hours of sleep. I do know there are people that don't sleep at all.

If it wasn't for dreams I would never sleep myself.

One time one of my friends didn't sleep for 6 days straight studying and cramming like hell for final exams.

On the day of the exam, he looked at his paper and saw a "W" pop out of the page and walked away.  He got up and said "Good bye Mr. W",  and needless to say, failed the exam.

Sleep deprivation would have a direct correlation with hallucinations of various kinds, much like the chemicals released during REM sleep to create images seen in dreams.

I can also suggest a time in my mind and wake up within about 10 minutes of that time, but only when I'm relatively well rested to begin with. After a long period of not sleeping well, I'm not able to wake up at "target times" like that.

Sometimes I overdo it though. When I think "I have to get up at 6 to take her to the airport... this is important so don't sleep a moment longer..." I end up waking up at 4:30 in the morning.

It has to do with your concept of time, I believe. I don't wear a watch, and I can usually tell time accurately within 15 minutes or so. Just specuation, though. :)

I have had similar experiences, however, I do wear a watch during the day.

In my case, my system (esp. hearing) probably gets some clues for "morning" times (other people getting up, traffic starting etc) and I would not rule out I actually wake up before the appointed time, open eyes/ sense the light level and go back to sleep without remembering this when I finally do wake up.

Since to my knowledge the sleep cycle (between REM phases) is quite accurately 90min, it seems not so unbelievable that some people unconsciously learn to programme themselves using this internal timer to wake up at will at set times.

Definitely.

Physiolgical: More influx of blood to the brain, affects the functioning of the heart, estimulates the pituitary gland, improves balance and stimulates the organs associated with it. Also an incredible muscle workout specially of the core muscles.

Psychological: Keep your eyes open and see the world as it actually is. Phisycal balance improves mental balance. Deals with fears both real and imaginary. Increases confidence and selfsteem. Impresses the hell out of people (especially if like me you can do a headstand on the lotus position).

Esoteric: In the perineum (the point midway between the anus and the genitalia - which is geographically the centre of the human body), lies the Muladhara chakra (don't ask). There burns the fire of passions. On the top of the head lies the 1000 petal lotus chakra (again, don't ask) which produces nectar and ambrosia - substances required for high spiritual achievements. Unfortunately as nectar and ambrosia are produced, they get burned by the fire of passions down below. By doing a headstand, the fire of passions now burns inverted, and nectar and ambrosia are allowed to accumulate. Besides the head stand also has consequences for Kundalini rising (don't even think about asking) ;)

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

On the day of the exam, he looked at his paper and saw a "W" pop out of the page and walked away.  He got up and said "Good bye Mr. W",  and needless to say, failed the exam.
Spatula, is that story true?!  If so, how would you know he hallucinated a 'W' popping out of the page?

Sounds like Rimmer from Red Dwarf...

Anyway, you need to sleep to learn the things you tried to learn. That guy is just insane...

Yeah, its funny cause the next moring I practice, the section somehow becomes a tad more familiar and easier to manuveur.
