romantic period intermediate music
on: August 05, 2012, 11:02:25 PM
hello everyone. I need some advice. I love music from the 19th century.Lately I've been playing Burgmuller, jcf Bach (18th century). can anybody recommend me nice pieces by Schytte and any other nice music from the 19th century not too difficult? intemediate level more or less. I think I made a mistake trying to learn Solfeggietto (CPE Bach), I can hardly play half of it, and I'm in the middle of nowhere. I love Chopin but apart from 3 or 4 less dificult pieces that I've already learnt, I think is out of my level.  thak you for your advices.

in addition to the above fine list. this lovely piece has a relatively simple structure, relaxed pace, comfortable basic patterns and straightforward RH melody with LH support harmony/arpegio  figures. though there will most certainly be a decent amount of money left on the table after intermediate level pianists get through this, I do not see why someone on a 5-6 out of 10 level wouldn't be able to do a nice job of this with some very disciplined practice.

While the PS gradings are not terrible or useless, they aren't always exactly what I'd term "consistent" or "orthodox".

Also, whether or not anyone agrees..  and despite having said it before in another thread.

I rather like the few of stephen heller's progressive studies that I have played, Op 45 + 47. - I just can't find a recording of them anywhere though. Op. 46 may be an option too.

Pieces like Op. 45 No. 9..
https://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/9/9c/IMSLP10211-Heller_-_Op.45_-_25_Etudes.PDF

^ CLEARLY intended to be preparatory to chopin 25/1 I think, just looking at it, - I haven't played it myself yet...  Also, CLEARLY far easier than the chopin etude :)

The main one I played, so many years ago now, was Op 45. No. 14 - for a grade 5 AMEB exam. I loved that study. From the very first notes its all this wonderful powerful tumultuous action packed sound..  feels like it belongs in an old pirate stage show's sword fight scene.

I should really print these all off and see what else there is in store.

first of all, thank you very much, I feel overwhelmed! that was kick!. even tough I love much of the suggestions I think the level is too high for me. I was thinking about musicians as Satie, Couperin, Amy
Beach, Streabbog, Schytte, Concone, Gurlitt.  maybe any of you have played their music and can tell your favourites. I know this composers are not the top ten of musicians, but I found their music very touching.thanks a lot, again

Some of these are not actually considered romantic composers (if defined by the era).
But take a look at the Gymnopedie nro 3 by Satie, I'm sure you can handle it and it's a rather nice little piece.

If you are enjoying some Burgmuller, but finding Solfeggietto difficult, and looking for more Romantic period pieces, I suggest the following...

Schumann and Tchaikovsky's Album for young, they both contain interesting pieces, like Reverie (Tchaikovsky), Knight Rupert (Schumann)...   Also, Grieg's Lyrical pieces, he wrote quite a lot, some easier than others.  I like his Folk song, Grandmother's Minuet and Elfin dance, which I think are your standard.

I love that period myself, and have enjoyed playing the above mentioned pieces in my youth...

you are right, I should have said music from early 19th to the beginning of the 20th.

Hi.

My younger cousin is playing a nice piece by Mendelssohn: Scherzo in e Op. 16 No.2

This seems to be a good intermediate piece.  Maybe check that out as well..?
