If you could have dinner with two people
on: August 08, 2012, 01:32:47 PM
One person that's alive, and one person that's dead.

Mine would be Valentina Lisitsa, and Rachmaninoff!

I wouldn't want Scriabin because he's crazy!  And he would probably freak out and do something weird and embarrass me.  And not Carl Vine because if I had a dollar for every composition, I'd have a dollar.  There would be nothing to talk about!

But it would be fine if Rachmaninoff couldn't show up because of traffic, and it was just Valentina  Lisitsa and I!  She's like a female reincarnation of Rachmaninoff!  So that would really be Valentina Rachmaninoff!

That would've been hard to guess.

But it would be fine if Rachmaninoff couldn't show up because of traffic, and it was just Valentina  Lisitsa and I!  She's like a female reincarnation of Rachmaninoff!  So that would really be Valentina Rachmaninoff! :-*

I'm not sure if this is creepy or not...

As interesting as Rachmaninoff is, everyone's going to be going to dinner with him, so I don't want to bore him! Plus, I can just talk to all the people he did go to dinner with in order to learn more about him. Bach, of course, would also be a lot of people's option, but he didn't speak English, I don't think (fact check on aisle two?).

Sooooooooo...

I'd take Sviatoslav Richter and Krystian Zimerman. I'm not positive Richter spoke English, but I assume so. If not, it'd be an even more interesting dinner party, wouldn't it?

Tempted as I was initially to ask who Valentina Lisitsa is, I felt that it would be more honest simply to point out that, although stretching her to 2m in height is something that I would not wish upon her, the notion that she is a female reincarnation of anyone, let alone Sergey Vassilyevich, is in any case patently absurd.

Why not just admit that you'd like to take Ms Lisitsa out to dinner and have done with it - and leave Rachmaninov out of it altogether?

Well I only said that because I really like the way she plays Rachmaninoff.   Except for her Rach 2.  I freaking hate her Rach 2!

If Horowitz was alive, then I would have gone to dinner with Horowitz because I think he does a better Rachmaninoff than Valentina.  And he actually plays Scriabin.  I only know of two recordings where Valentina plays Scriabin.

Well the title of the thread is, 'If you could go out to dinner with two people', not one person.   :P

Ahhhhhh I don't get what everyone's obsession with those is! They're etudes! You're supposed to play them to help you play the pieces you aspire to play, not be the pieces you aspire to play! Just post another half-tempo poorly-executed revolutionary etude on YouTube and move on!

He might just ditch himself if someone didn't provide him with a low enough chair to sit on...

Anyway - how's about Elliott Carter and John Cage?

Or maybe John Adams and Richard Nixon?

Or Meryl Streep and Margaret Thatcher?

Perhaps Thalbergmad and Robert Schumann?

George Gershwin and Arnold Schönberg?

A word of advice; never have dinner with two sopranos (unless you're prepared to live with the possibility that there may be few if any dishes left to wash up afterwards)...

Well, I couldn't help myself, such a nice setup you gave me, and all!  I did use my muscles to scroll upwards and I get it.  But, I'm getting Gould a tall chair  ;D.  I will say, I'd have dinner with Maryl Streep any day, that lady's hawt ... haha (written strictly for shock value).  But, I'd *love* to see what she has to say about the world.  She's my favorite actress.

OK, I take it back.  I'm not putting Gould with anybody ... well, unless I'm completely not interested in listening to the other person, and if I *must* go to dinner with two people.  In that case, I'll put him with pts1 (haha ... he totally deserves that, but I actually feel bad writing it!  I'm going to keep it there nonetheless).

I don't have a "favourite actress" as such but I do have immense admiration and respect for Ms Streep.

Anyway, should the opportunity ever arise, I would, for the record, be delighted to have dinner with m1469 and Karli, irrespective of the specific number of dinner guests that such an occasion might involve...
