Need some advice/Fantasi Impromtu (yea one of those)
on: August 08, 2012, 10:14:35 PM
Hi, my names Francisco.
Real quick background:
picked up piano at age 9 til 15, performed and got tested by the guild (i don't remember what the name is) every year for 6 years.
The last pieces I left off on was Minute "Valse".
Im now..22! (time wasted, I could've been a boss pianist by now)
Picked up piano again, don't really have the time nor money to hire a teacher.
So Im polishing up on the last couple of pieces I ever played.
Valse (I got it down in a day) Nocturne in B minor (Chopin) OP. 69 No. 2
Adagio, Moonlight. Im getting it back pretty quick.
Throughout the years, I've stayed playing guitar, piano, etc. Just not classical.
So now that I'm polishing up, Im curious to know what my grade level is, with the pieces Ive described. I want to say lvl 5.
Anyways, I started tackling Fantasi Impromptu, I got the first page. (super slow, nice and easy).
So maybe you can guys can tell me if this is a bad idea?
What other pieces, should I tackle on my own? since I don't have a teacher, but want to continue to get better.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Schumann's Kinderszenen, Cchopin's easier nocturnes (Op.9 No.2, for example), easier preludes (Op.28 No.7), mazurkas, and Bach's Inventions and Sinfonias.
Bach Prelude and Fugue BWV848
Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.13
Chopin Etude Op.10 No.4
Chopin Scherzo Op.31
Mussorgsky "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition

I think trying to tackle the Fantasy Impromptu at this stage is not a good idea.  Have a look at the grade listing of pieces on this site (https://www.pianostreet.com/piano_music/download_1/sheet_1.php) and start of with a few more at the level you are, just to get it bedded down, and then pick a piece a grade up (no more) and perfect a few at that level before moving on. It will be much better for you and help you advance more quickly.
