KAWAI US5X or KAWAI US55?
on: August 12, 2012, 07:01:19 PM
Hi to all! This is my first post to this forum. I am retired and started learning to play the piano a little more than a year ago. (classical method). I am looking to purchase a good quality, professional, used piano. Sound and quality are very important to me.Given my budget limitations, I decided to focus on either a professional Yamaha or a Kawai Upright. Now, my choice has narrowed to a Kawai US55 (1987) or a Kawai US5X (1991) from the same dealer. Both are made in Japan, reconditioned by the dealer and of comparable condition. Also the price is almost the same. I am leaning towards the US5X, which is supposed to be a Kawai "high end" model. However, this model was not introduced to the US, unlike the US6X. Is anybody here familiar with the US5X?  How is it different from the US55 or US50? Which model would you recommend, the US55 or the US5X?  BTW both models come with a 10 year warranty by the seller.Thank you for helping this newbie to come to a final decision! :)

Have you played them both ? This may matter more, since no matter how well a piano is rated over another, if you don't like it you are less likely to play it. One that fits you and you enjoy playing is probably more important in this case. And that could be down to how it was rebuilt vs actual model differences !

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Thanks for your reply, David! No, I have not played either of them yet, as they are both being reconditioned. You are right of course, I will purchase the one that I like best with regards to tone and action. I was just trying to find out, if there was any significant difference between these two models that might influence my decision. Sofar, nobody has mentioned any. So, it will probably come down to my own personal preference. Best regards.
