restructuring a short piece so it's longer.
on: August 14, 2012, 06:11:39 PM
I sometimes really enjoy playing these short one page pieces that are over in less than a minute. I am often wondering, "if only it was longer". Anybody here have these same feelings?

So, these are some things I do.

I just may play the thing twice in a row.

If it's AB form then I play maybe ABA.

Or ABABA or even AABB.

I have added intros. I have changed (hopefully improved) endings or added them.

I have added D.S. al FINE or coda. Pretty much whatever I feel like. Pieces then take on a life of their own growing and evolving.

Sometimes, a wrong note is a good thing. Wow, that sounded great. What did I just do?

I have kept the left hand accompaniment of a piece and improvised over it with the right hand going where I go. I don't know. This isn't something I am choosing to do. It just sort of happens. I noticed it's only with pieces I know very well. Others remark, "The muse is in attendance".

Anybody else here do any of these things?

Do you use any "lengthening" tips that you would like to share?

Thank you, Joe.

I find a longer piece in the same style or by the same composer.
