Articulation tips for Kabalevsky Op. 39, No. 19?
on: August 17, 2012, 06:21:56 AM
In particular bars 3 and 7 of the right hand I find puzzling.

I watched and listened to several performances on Youtube and these two measures were played several different ways which was no help to me at all. Some were slurred, others staccato and still others portamento.

I have another post addressing this specific issue about slurs over rests but my question still remains unanswered. Probably cause I mentioned a somewhat obscure piece. This one should be more familiar to many members.

I think it sounds best with bar 3 starting with a lone staccato Bb 8th note followed by an 8th rest and starting the slur on the second beat of the measure but is this the "correct" articulation or is this piece open to different interpretations because of the way it's written?

Next, a slur begins on beat 4 of measure six which is composed of two 8th notes. I think this slur should end on the 1st 8th note of measure 7 and then a new slur should start on the second beat of measure 7. This is a sort of echo of the previous motif. Is this the "correct" articulation or do I have this wrong?

Any tips or suggestions as always are greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joe.

I'm afraid I haven't got my copy at the moment so can't help.  I love teaching Kabalevsky, he knows exactly what he wants.  Make sure you bring out every detail.
