Digital recording
on: August 19, 2012, 08:21:44 AM
Don't know if this should go under instruments...

How do you people get such good sound when recording out of a digital piano? I have tried to make recordings from my silent piano and they sound just horrible. Attached is an example (sorry for the mistakes).

Also why is it that when playing silent my piano sometimes gets these spouts of loudness or accents by itself? Does it have something to do with the limited amount of polytones or does the digital sample get mixed somehow? It hard enough to control the dynamics without these...

Outin, it could just be that you need a bit better grade digital. I don't know the grade of this one that you have but in the recent past you have mentioned that you don't care for it. Just in this years time alone, 2011-2012 really, there has been a substantial upgrade in stereo samplings on many mid grade digitals. If yours is older and also a lower grade, that may account for your problem.

In terms of best digital sound in a mid priced digital stage piano I suggest you listen to Kawais MP 6 , EP3 and new EP7 recordings at the Kawai site ( I go to Kawai US). Also some Youtube recordings of Roland's pianos. Since you own an acoustic I assume that if you upgraded you would want a good stage piano vs a digital console ( just guessing).

Hopefully someone with more knowledge about digital recording will answer your question more accurately for you. Of course also there is digital editing to consider !

Best regards, hope it helps a little,
David

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

I need to explain. I don't have a digital piano at the moment at all, I have a silent upright Yamaha, so I can get digital sound out of the same piano. It should be the sampled sound of a concert grand. There is the possibility to save as MIDI files, but those sound really bad. They would need serious editing to even be able to listen to them.

Just to compare, here is the same piece (in two files) recorded today in the acoustic mode.

Yes I understand now.  My mistake, was wondering if you were recording off your acoustic but ran with the other thought ! Have to say I don't know the answer on this one. Hopefully you will get a lot of replies and I can learn something too.

Think you need a different forum. This one isn't responding.

It's ok. I decided not to record anything at the moment. It just makes me more insecure about my playing. Because my teacher says it's getting better and it also sounds better to me there, but when I listen to what I record, what I hear is just horrible.
