I didn't want to respond to this thread, but I had to at this:

Absolutely.  I agree entirely.  However i would add that whilst showing respect, it is perhaps worth balancing that respect among a wide range of pianists rather than devoting it all to Horowitz.  (And, maybe Argerich too.)  This is where i feel all the Horowitz worship becomes damaging.

So there is a lot of Horowitz worship.  Exactly how is this damaging to the musical community, or to other pianists?  Horowitz was an excellent pianist.   One of many.  And no one with a brain would argue that a certain pianist sucks because he doesn't play the way Horowitz plays.

Here, I see pretty critical and fair examination of artists.  I don't see anyone here praising the recordings that Horowitz did badly simply because it was Horowitz playing.  If anything, I see just as much criticism of Horowitz here as praise.

What's the problem?

Statements exactly like "No one can touch horowitz in that piece."  This is like a form of fundamentalism- once it's decided, you will come to exactly the same conclusion even if you DO hear someone better, simply because you KNOW that HOROWITZ did it, and because horowitz is SO GOOD, this new recording, only by the fact that it fails to be performed by horowitz, is worse.
What it all comes down to is that one does not play the piano with one’s fingers; one plays the piano with one’s mind.-  Glenn Gould

Yeah, I saw that you were being sarcastic, but it was against something I said, so I felt the need to defend myself.  Unfortunately tone of voice, one of the best indicators of sarcasm and humor, is extremely difficult to convey online.

Sorry. I didn't mean to provoke you specifically. My comment was directed at the entire thread.

Does anybody have a good idea for an emoticon for displaying sarcasm?
