Opinions needed for recital program
on: August 21, 2012, 05:46:49 AM
Hi all, i am a graduate piano performance major here and i am now preparing for my graduate recital end of this year. My recital program is as below:

J. S. Bach's prelude and fugue in G major book II
Schubert's Sonata in A minor D. 784
Prokofiev's Sonata no. 7 in Bb, Op. 83
Liszt's Totentanz

What do you guys think about the program?
Putting Prokofiev's sonata and Liszt's Totentanz together in one program does sound a bit heavy. Have anyone of you seen a program like this before? I am still considering whether i should replace the Liszt with something shorter and light.

Hey!

Very impressive repertoire. You must be quite the piano master to consider such a list of extremely difficult pieces. I agree that the Prokofiev 7 and Totentanz might be a bit heavy to have together, but I don't think there would be anything wrong with doing that at all.

Some suggestions if you were to replace anything, maybe you could replace the Liszt with something romantic but a bit lighter? The Scriabin 3rd sonata perhaps? Or maybe if you want to stick with Liszt, something like the Reminiscences de Norma might be good to lighten up the mood a bit after the Prokofiev. Or even the Chopin Barcarolle if you're feeling brave ;D.

Really in the end I think it should be your choice, of what you are comfortable with learning and playing, and a program that you yourself will really enjoy and be happy with.

Good luck at your recital!

If I were you, I'd for sure move sonata no. 7 to the end of the program since I think it has such an awesome finish, you'd have trouble not disappointing with the next piece. Then, I think Liszt is a good option, but if you don't want Totentanz, there are plenty of other great Liszt pieces to choose from.

Challenging program!! I like it.

My only suggestion would be to replace one of those pieces with a living composer.
