Opinions needed for recital program
on: August 21, 2012, 05:48:08 AM
Hi all, i am a graduate piano performance major here and i am now preparing for my graduate recital end of this year. My recital program is as below:

J. S. Bach's prelude and fugue in G major book II
Schubert's Sonata in A minor D. 784
Prokofiev's Sonata no. 7 in Bb, Op. 83
Liszt's Totentanz

What do you guys think about the program?
Putting Prokofiev's sonata and Liszt's Totentanz together in one program does sound a bit heavy. Have anyone of you seen a program like this before? I am still considering whether i should replace the Liszt with something shorter and light.

Why don't you replace the Totentanz with Harmonies du soir? It's definitely lighter than Totentanz and also great to end the program :)

I agree...maybe his Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude :)
Currently working on:

Bach - P&F in C# Major, BWV 872, Book II
Haydn - Sonata No.60 in C Major, Hob. XVI 50
Mendelssohn - Variations Serieuses
Debussy - Reflets dans l'eau
Ravel - Jeux d'eau

Take out Prokofiev Sonata or Liszt Totentanz. Both together = too flashy!
Bach Prelude and Fugue BWV848
Beethoven Piano Sonata Op.13
Chopin Etude Op.10 No.4
Chopin Scherzo Op.31
Mussorgsky "The Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition

its a good program. It is actually a good idea to have prok 7th and totentanz in the same program: you'll keep the audience awake!
if you might want to switch totentanz to something lighter, why not HR #2, #6, or TE #4? IMO they are both easier than totentanz(but are by no means easy) but are great recital enders.

I like WTC but it sounds like "exercise piece" to some people, so why not Scarlatti sonata(s) or some other J.S. Bach short work(s).

If Prokofiev PS #7 and Liszt's Totentanz are not played consecutively, then I think it's fine, in fact great choices.

GREAT PROGRAM!!!!!!!!   I love the P & F!!!!  I think everyone will need a break between the Sonata and Listz. How about some French? A Faure Nocturne or a couple lyrical Preludes of Debussy? Maybe the Barber Nocturne or the set of Excursions. Good luck!
