Welcome to high school!

The materials really depend on the requirements of your teachers, but generally you'll need:

- At least a 2 in. binder
- Multiple #2 pencils/mechanical pencils
- Pencil sharpener (unless lead grows back on your pencils)
- Multiple pens (black, blue, red), as some teachers require you to submit your work in pen only
- Notebooks, for taking notes; these are useful if you can't remember everything in every single lecture
- Lined paper (preferably college ruled)
- Scientific calculator (at the level of math you are at, there are tedious but minor calculations that can be done quickly with this)
- Crayons/colored pencils (yes I know that you are in high school, but there are the teachers that still give little "elementary school" assignments that require coloring)
- Highlighter
- Sharpie pen

And there are the materials that are somewhat useful

- Glue/tape
- Sticky notes
- Mini stapler

That's all I can think of right now; I'm not usually the most prepared student.

Oh, and don't forget a good attitude and motivation, essential to surviving high school without being too damaged.

Good luck to you, although you probably won't need it. I'll be crashing and burning the first week in junior year. ::)

All you need is like four or five notebooks, two pencils, a pen, and a calculator.

That's it.  If you run out of pen or pencils, you can always ask someone sitting next to you.

And if you don't have a Calculator, you can borrow one from your teacher.  But if he/she doesn't let you, it's no big deal.  I survived my first two in a half years of highschool without a calculator.

For a moment I actually thought you decided to skip all the 7-8 grade stuff and progress to something virtuosic!  ;D

Have fun in school!

What a coincidence! I'm also starting 9th grade this year too!  ;D

Well, good luck! I think perprocrastinate already mentioned most of everything you need.  8)

Woohoo! High school! Enjoy it as much as you can. As one of my sister's ex-boyfriends told me, "It's the time when you have the most freedom with the least amount of responsibility." Looking back, it's totally true.

Must-Haves
  • A good backpack. Go for the double-strapped ones with good padded straps (they're the easiest on the back - when you're older, your back will be thanking you), and of course, lots of pockets helps. If you get a good quality backpack and take care of it, it can last you years.
  • Writing materials - pens (blue or black, and red), white-out, pencils, an eraser or two.
  • Binders, one for each subject, and lined paper to put inside it. If you get good binders and/or take care of them, they can last years. Go for at least 1.5 inches.
  • Alternatively, some people use notebooks (one for each class) instead of binders, but it is purely a personal preference.
  • A scientific calculator. If you don't lose it or break it, it'll last you all the way through high school.
  • Colouring materials, such as pencil crayons and makers. Yes, you still need these in high school! You don't need anything fancy, though, unless you really want to pursue the artistic courses.
  • A weekly planner. My schools always provided them, but if yours doesn't, you better get one so you can get organized and keep track of due dates and such!

Good-to-Haves
  • Highlighters. Not necessary, but some people find them very useful.
  • Sticky notes/Tabs.
  • Ruler. Not as necessary as in elementary school, as math in high school gets increasingly abstract and algebraic, but useful for making lines and stuff. As a bonus, the ruler I had in high school also served as a three-hole punch!
  • USB memory stick. By now, pretty much all schools will have computers available for students to use. These are useful if you want to work on something at home and at school, or if your printer breaks down at home and you need to bring the file to school and print it out there! (Or alternatively, if you procrastinated hard and need to finish up your assignment at school...Sadly, I have been there, done that).
  • Mini dictionaries for your Spanish and Latin classes.
  • Those tabbed binder separator things. If you have a binder for each subject, you can use the tabbed dividers to separate each chapter/unit to keep things better organized.
  • Those math sets that come with the little ruler, a protractor, a compass (circle-maker), etc. This is iffy. I never used mine in high school because, like I said, math was mostly algebraic and abstract in high school, but other high schools might be different. I say don't buy one for now, but if you actually need one in class, then go for it then and only then.
Things You Don't Need
  • The latest iPad, laptop...whatever. I did not use a laptop until my third year of university, and even then, it wasn't a necessity.
  • A pack of gel pens in 24 different colours. Unless you want them for your own personal enjoyment.
  • Fancy pens/pencils. A $2 pen will work just as well as a $20 pen, and they are just as likely to get lost/stolen. Take this from someone who writes a lot in her job.
