UHOH
on: August 23, 2012, 09:50:53 PM
Yeah, my college audition is in November. I am going to perform some easy Bach, winter wind etude, and some Debussy. Unfortunately Dr. Garcia invited me to play for him in 3 weeks, also. I am thinking Ravel first sentimental Valse and Chopin nocturne op 15 no 2. What do you guys think? It is going to be informal. Should I do that bit or just decline? I haven't played Beethoven much so I am skipping that for now. Perhaps suggestions? Thanks!

If you feel comfortable with the nocturne and valse, go for it! If not, then decline.

Don't all colleges require a classical sonata?

No, hence why I have not been practicing these. My school is local and the requirement is 3 pieces of contrast, each from different time periods. But I do plan on doing one + here soon. I feel ok about it. I know I don't have to play for him. It will depend on how I am doing the week before because I have lots of brushing up to do! Thanks!!

Which school are you applying for?
Is Dr Garcia your possible future teacher? If yes, my suggestion is to play for him.
Not only will you learn something from him that you can use toward your audition, but he will also know about you and possibly support you when the committee decides whether to accept you or not.

I was thinking the same thing. He said he was going to have a teacher listen in, too. My question is, is it ok that I am not playing classical sonata? I am somehow not sure and feeling scared.

What is the school you are applying for?

Generally speaking, requirements for auditions include a classical sonata, but that varies from school to school. The best way to answer this is to link to the school and their page of requirements

Yeah it is quite an interesting situation. Quite anticipated yet unexpected.

Oh sorry, that was a typo.  I was sending an email to my friend while typing that comment at the same time.

I knew that the whole time!

I pretty sure chopin2015 is a girl.

"brother" in that context doesn't really denote gender. It's like, "dude" and "guy, which, while technically terms for a male, have been adopted to be used for men and women, since there really isn't a female alternative (yes, "gal", I know, but while technically the female equivalent, denotes a completely different meaning to the word). Obviously, "sister" would be the female version, but it doesn't mean the same thing in that context.
