Need a keyboard or piano
on: August 24, 2012, 03:55:27 AM
I'm a adult beginner with a budget around $550. Found the following on Craigslist:

Baldwin E-140 $395 good shape and tuned

Wurlitzer Upright Spinet good shape and tuned $400

Henry F. Spinet good condition $300

Other options are the Yamaha P95 or Casio PX-130

Or should I continue to save.

Before you buy a used acoustic piano read this page:  https://www.precisionpianos.com/faq.php

That Baldwin should be a good piano, if it's a B as well it's kind of a gem. But that's dependant on if meets the criteria written on the page I linked you to. It is a consol at 41 inches incidentally.

I personally have no use for any brand Spinet Piano, the strings are too short and the tuning pins in a awkward place. More likely to go out of tune as well (all pianos go out of tune just short strings tend to quicken the process and the pins being in an awkward place can make it hard to set the pins. If the pins are not set properly this also aids tuning to drop quickly). Some console pianos are quite good however, which is the medium range in height on an upright style piano.

In a digital the first make and model to get my attention for under $1000 is the Korg SP 250. This is because of the action. If you can spend enough to get graded hammers that would be better than the P95 or the Casio you mention, in that it will aid in you being able to transition to an acoustic piano more reliably. You may have a teacher who teaches with acoustic for instance or you may see a piano in a lounge and decide to take a whack at playing it. If you have a mushy digital at home that plays like accordian keys instead of piano keys it will feel strange to play the acoustic.

However, I tend to end with any piano is better than none ! If you don't have one at all then you have to start someplace.

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
