Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. The East Dulwich Amateur Music Makers Group is an informal group of South Londoners that meet to listen to each other’s playing. Performing is entirely optional – observers are most welcome. We welcome beginners to advanced level musicians, ages 18+.

The group will next meet at 4pm (time TBC) on 27 January 2013 at The Michael Croft Theatre, Alleyn’s School in East Dulwich. The venue has a wonderful Steinway C grand piano. We welcome instrumentalists and singers as well as ensembles. If you require an accompanist, we have a pianist available on the day at a small extra fee.

Full details are here:

If anyone is interested in playing duets on the day, get in touch as I'm always looking for duet partners :)

Wish I lived near London -sadly I live a million miles away in Wales -sounds like an interesting group this.
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

It's quite easy to set up your own group if you can find a venue and a few pianists!
