Percy Grainger Repertoire
on: August 31, 2012, 03:58:12 PM
I have been invited to do a 15-20 min recital
I think I should do just one composer who is relatively unknown - currently I am thinking Percy Grainger,
With pieces (in no particular order) of:

grainger- scotch strathspey and reel
Colonial Song
In Dahomey
ramble on love
or others, what would you suggest?

Harry
Rachmaninov is accompanying a violinst who loses his place in the music. The violinst strolls casually over to Rachmaninov, and says: 'Where are we?'
And Rachmaninov whispers: 'In Carnegie Hall'

Alright! Finally another grainger fan (I'm more a fannatic lol). Id hardly call him 'unknown' though that's certainly mot a reason to not go thru w an all grainger program. Ur selections look good. I mightthrow in his transcription of the bach organ toccata and fugue in g minor or "blithe bells" on sheep may safely graze from  (he did some other bach works but this is most likely ro be recognized by audiences) for variety. If not to ur liking I might look at the grieg schumann tachaikovey or rachmaninoff concertosolo concert transceiptions too and u have some varietty in there for legth considerations.

Also see his gerwshin song transcriptions to ie love walked in and man I love. Either of those would make a swell encore and gain give some variety in style and mood whilst staying w the theme (sorry if iused whilst incorrectly I'm trying to learn where and when to utilize it lol)

Country Gardens is nice and relatively easy for PG. And a pleasing tune for the general audience. Most of his work is way beyond me, with all the extra add-ins he devised. Good luck!

He also did a lovely version of Danny Boy, which should go down well with an audience.

Sounds fun! In Dahomey is probably my favorite Grainger piece, so its cool to hear about someone performing it. His piece Spoon River is also a fun one and might go well with your program.
