EPIC music
on: September 07, 2012, 01:11:59 AM
I've recently discovered a style of music that really appeals to me - it is challenging to learn, yet makes me want to learn it because of how great it sounds. The sad fact is, the songs I'm really interested in learning actually come from video games. Note that I don't actually play these games, but I've noticed it seems to be the end of the game 'boss battles' that are the most epic!

Here are a few examples:
More than one piano layer, and a drum track:

(I really love the first minute or so of this)

Solo -

(I find this just simply wonderful.. such a great song and and beautifully played)

I just wanted to ask around if anyone knew similar songs they could recommend, I'd really appreciate it. Or if you have similar taste I'd love to hear your opinions!

Thank for your time :)

Jake

ENRIQUE!!!!!

??

indeed as the resident fan boy for all things japan, it's nice to hear someone discovering this genre.

to the OP, if you like battle themes, then you may want to listen to and obtain scores (purchase) to the following:

I-my favorite 'battle theme', i am working on this right now and it has some super nice moments, some the the harmonies and modulations are just so good (i.e in the slower lyrical sections)!

ii-my second favorite, this is really a super nice arrangement,

as for the decisive battle, i really like this arrangment, i may get to work on this over christmas break in a few months

another fun battle theme from FF IX (gets super interesting at 1:30)

from the new piano opera that hit earlier this year

*sigh, oh KH PC, how i love thee, let me count the ways.....

from the nier pc that hit a few months back, i'm working on 'grandma' from it which is actually a boss theme but it's not what you'd expect, very Chopin/Rachmaninoff inspired
this might be more what you'are after

not really a 'battle theme' exactly but it has quotes from one of the main battle themes

another horrendously difficult one (all the battle themes generally are very 'modern' in sound and construction with complex rhythms and lush harmonies )

this is the 'newest one' the right hand is incredibly  fast at times, very much reminds me of a couple chopin etudes

Yes, quite a lot. But it's more because of the great singers, doesn't have relevance to my piano experience.

Yeah, it's a collaborative experience. I used to work at Guitar Center and experienced quite a few Soulful key players during the intimate hours in the keyboard section. This one drummer guy for a gospel band sang so beautifully. OOOh, this is what I am listening to right now, on a different note. No vocals :(

For some reason I just can't think of the piano as a contemporary instrument :)

Players like Thelonius Monk were great, but somehow for me nothing can beat a good classical (in the broad meaning) piano piece when played well.

The contemporary part-definitely not a piano but keyboards and synths and rhodes are cool!

Lightning's theme?

yeah that one  i had it pulled up in a yt window too! but somehow forgot to yt link/embed it when it put fang's theme up, i'm actually on the back end of that one and the prelude from that collection and will perform  at a pretty big venue in november (i will lead with the prelude and close with lightnings' theme blinded by light), have not decided if i will have a short encore prepped just in case; i hope to have my interpretation of this up in the audition room in approx 8 weeks.
thanks for that i was so tired i just didn't catch that i had it up but didn't include it.

to the OP, lightning's them is not the battle theme per se but the "  ~ " in piano collections titles designates that the solo is composed of two themes, sometimes related sometimes not. in this case it is 'blinded by light' that serves as the battle music for much of the action in the first installment of FF XIII.
