Thalberg sheet music books?
on: September 15, 2012, 01:05:11 PM
I'd like to buy some of Thalberg's works in book form, but I cannot find anything. Nothing on Amazon or G. Henle...
Help?
Thanks.

I'm not aware of anything either. I suspect a lot of his output has been out of print for a long time, possibly since the 19th century. Of course there are plenty scans on IMSLP but they are often quite poor quality. I've seen some Thalberg in book form in a library; also not ideal.
You can buy a limited number of pdfs from Polymnia Records here:
https://www.polymnia.com/sheetmusic.htm
(I mention this because these are clean, legible pdfs). Beware online sites selling pdfs which will almost certainly turn out to be exactly the same scans as on IMSLP.

Thanks. I suppose he really is somewhat of a forgotten composer. I wonder how much of his music is lost or hidden in some random private collection of sheet music?
It's hard to "flip through" his pieces when you have to download a single piece every time and then view it on the computer. Most of the pieces I've heard from him are still way, way out of my league. Right now I'm working on Lacrimosa, which is hard enough... I'd like to find other pieces at the same level.

Your amazon search skills need a boost:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/main?ie=UTF8&asin=B004I5FK94&isAmazonFulfilled=0&isCBA=&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&seller=AI2QNGPUNIDR9
Then enter "Thalberg" in the search box.

Great, thanks! I admit I only used amazon.co.uk.
I can't really justify buying a book from the US as the import duties would double or triple the price.. If only they cost under $14! That is the maximum value and item can have for one not to have to pay duties... Oh well...

I have a few originals, but not much exists in modern publications.
Be careful what you buy re the remarks above about IMSLP sheet in crappy covers sold for many $$$.
