Schubert Impromptu in F Minor, Op 142, No. 4
on: September 19, 2012, 12:18:09 PM
This is VERY MUCH a work in progress. My teacher has asked me to play this for him next week and I'm still smoothing out issues with my thirds and issues at different points in the piece where I haven't spent enough time. I'd love some constructive criticism (please forgive the flubs).

Thanks.

You're doing great! Have you had this piece a while? I don't know why you are freaking out, you are even consistent with your tone(from what I heard). Let me know why you are nervous. P.S Love the reverb. :PPP

I've been working on this for about 3 months now (with an average of ~3 hours on the piece each week due to an extremely busy summer). My teacher wants me to "perform" this for him on Monday. You caught me with the reverb :P, I use a package, the reverb level lower than this is too little and this is too much.

For my money, it's just a little fast (but I often think that about how everyone plays Schubert, so take it with that in mind).

Not sure if it's the fault of the recording, but your dynamic range could be broader, and don't be afraid to really go for some of those loud staccatos, they should really stand out at times.

A few flubs still, but nothing to really worry about. Nice work!

Very nice work! and I like the reverb on the acoustic piano! It is cheesy mostly on simulated pianos. I like your sound! But yeah just make sure to do slow practice once in a while, to freshen your fast sections up, and to avoid mugginess.  ::)

I've been trying hard.. one of the reasons that I am unable to produce a huge range right now is because I've muffled my piano with comforters to reduce the noise for my neighbors (really thin walls!) and so this is the best I could manage. On my teacher's grand piano (both the Steinway and the Yamaha that he has in his studio), I'm able to get a lot more dynamic range. However, I absolutely cannot get the pp that Zimmerman gets. Check out his version.. absolutely sublime!!
I like this even better than Brendel's interpretation (which is GREAT as well).

OK, that explains the range. Just be careful to keep hearing the full dynamics in your head when you practice, even if the piano doesn't play them.

Hadn't heard the Zimmerman before. Nice.
