Preparing For College
on: September 23, 2012, 09:08:20 PM
How much repertoire is a student expected to know when entering a college? Also, what technique level is expected? I've learned many things over the years but obviously I don't keep everything in my memory. Right now, I am currently working on:
Debussy:
- Dancers of Delphi
- The Girl with the Flaxen Hair
- Minstrels
- The Hills of Anacapri
Chopin:
- Etudes, op. 10 nos. 2, 5, 8
- Scherzo, op. 31
- Waltz, op. 34 no. 1
- Impromptu, op. 36
- Ballade, op. 38
- Mazurkas, op. 41
- Nocturne, op. 62/2
Beethoven:
- Sonata, op. 2 no. 2
Bach:
- Prelude and fugue no. 1 in C major (book 1)
- Prelude and fugue no. 20 in A minor (book 2)
Is this repertoire acceptable for a college applicant? Is it broad enough? Please give me all the information you can! Much appreciated.

If you're from Australia, then that's more than enough to get in. I say that will get you through the door.
Depending on which college you're attending, they'll have requirements you need to meet.

Your level of repertoire appears fine for college entry. However, what is more important is the quality at which you can play your repertoire. Most colleges will base their offer of admission on a successful audition, and not the number of pieces in your overall repertoire. For your audition, you should choose pieces that show your strengths.
It would be a good idea to start preparing a 20th/21st century work. These are frequently asked for. As well, the college may ask for some national content: a composer based in the same country as the college.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
