What to wear to college auditions
on: September 24, 2012, 01:15:35 AM
Now, obviously appearance is not the most important part of my audition, but it does matter as it will affect their subconscious impression of me. Should I wear a full suit or maybe just a shirt and tie?

So you think they are not looking for commercial crossover types that would play the piano amazingly in ragged jeans and make teenage girls scream  ;D

I was thinking of wearing some blue trousers, a slim fit button up shirt with sleeves rolled up, and a wooden bow tie.

Don't forget the propeller hat to complete the picture.  ::)

I think the wooden bow tie is perhaps a little eccentric for an audition.

I wear it occasionally and everyone tells me that it looks awesome.

Now tell me that doesn't look cool!

I'd advise also wearing pants and shoes.

The wooden bow tie is kind of cool.

You can't go wrong with a basic suit. I don't think anyone would say you're over dressed. Khackis, shirt, and tie is probably ok.  It depends where you're auditioning and what the context is.  An audition day might be more formal.  Just stopping by to play for a prof might be less formal.  Even if you are dressed up more than they expect, that's probably not going to hurt anything or create a negative impression.  If you're underdressed (esp. if not wearing pants or shoes) that could be a negative.

Well it's nice to know that Ajs aka J Menz doesn't have a third personality.

I was under the slight suspicion (5% chance) that you were all the same person.

But now your name is completely cleared.  Sorry for doubting you.

Meh, it was more like a 3% chance.

2% chance...

I'm just me.

Although the wooden bow tie would be a royal pain to tie.

Why do the clothes you wear even matter? -I know it does -but it shouldn't.

It shows you're taking it seriously and you're respectful.  And it's how your presenting the music.

Normal ones tie at the front, not clip at the back.

Actually, they aint as bad as I was thinking. Still a little "out there" for an audition, though. Maybe you could pull it off.  :-\

Jury member 1:  Hmmm, these two guys are really good.  Who do we pick?  No. 17 or No. 78?

Jury member 2:  Well I don't remember what they looked like.

Jury member 3:  *sigh* we have to sift through all these papers.  What a drag...

Jury member 1:  Wait, wasn't No. 78 the guy with the wooden bowtie?  That looked pretty badass!

Jury member 3:  Oh yeah, I remember that kid!  I gotta ask him where he got that one from.  I'm gonna wear one for my next concert in Carnegie hall.

Jury member 2:  Well if we're gonna ask him where he got his wooden bowtie from, we should probably accept him or else he's gonna feel too salty to tell us where he got it from.

Jury member 1:  I'm getting that bowtie...  Looks like we have no choice but to accept No. 78 and give him a full ride scholarship with a complementary 9 foot Steinway.  Any objections?

Everyone else:  No objections...

Acceptance letter:

Hey what's up kid!  We really like your bowtie, and we wanna know where you got it from!  So we decided to accept you and give you a full ride scholarship with a complimentary 9 foot Steinway if you tell us where you got that extra badass bowtie.

No. 78:  Are you freaking kidding me...   >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

You see, the wooden bowtie stands out.  When your bowtie stands out, you stand out.  And when you stand out, people don't forget you.  And when people don't forget you, they remember you.  And when people remember you, you get accepted into music schools.

They don't know you suck until you play that first note.  Walk out confidently, smile, be well-dressed... They can't tell anything about anyone's performing ability until you play that first note.

I still remember someone who wore a "salmon" tie during their final jury performance at the end of the semester.  Haha... It wasn't actually a salmon.... It may have been mistaken for one, but it wasn't one.  Haha.  It wasn't me either.  I was just around when this event occurred.  The jurors noticed too.  One thought it was funny or at least amusing, "Is that a salmon tie?"  "Yes... Why yes, that's it is.  A salmon.  It's a salmon tie."  During a final.  I'm laughing now.

i rather like the idea of the bow tie-tie if we're going the 'eccentric artist' route

If I was a judge -I would be more interested in a potential student being respectful to the composer -but nevertheless having some audacity of spirit to play with imagination and flair -

Also , I guess if a guy wants to be remembered he could always turn up wearing a mini skirt -that would get you noticed.  ;D

I wore t-shirt and jeans on my audition.

But I don't think they are very picky with that sort of thing over here

Try this: ;D
