Progressive Programs
on: September 26, 2012, 09:14:46 AM
In the hope that someone out there is as interested as myself in creating concert programs, I ask pianostreet what programs would you like to hear or perform? For some reason I've always been disappointed with what pianists choose to play for concerts. I feel it would encourage a wider audience if there was an underlying theme and not just the same regurgitated classics. Some of my thoughts:
Paganini's influence:
Schumann 6 Concert Etudes on Paganini Op.10
Liszt 6 Paganini Etudes S.140
Brahms 28 Variations on a Theme by Paganini Op.35
Appassionata:
Beethoven Sonata Op.57
Liszt Transcendental Etude X
Scriabin Allegro Appassionata Op.4
(A bit on the short side)
Fantasies:
Mozart Fantasy in c minor k.475
Schumann Fantasy Op.17
Chopin Fantasy Op.49
Scriabin Fantasy Op.28
Schubert Fantasy in C major
Preludes:
Preludes in all 24 keys, but selecting the pianist's favourites from Bach, Chopin, Alkan, Busoni, Shostakovich etc. Too long for me to produce my list. Would be a delight to see someone else's.
Death:
Bach/Busoni Chaconne (supposedly written for his late wife)
Chopin Sonata No. 2 Op.35
Liszt Funerailles
Scriabin Sonata Op.1 (Remember reading it was written as a funeral piece for his right hand after he damaged it practicing Liszt)
Devils' Inspiration:
Liszt Mephisto Waltz
Alkan No.3 Op.39 Etude 'Scherzo Diabolico'
Saint-Saens/Liszt/Horowitz (Has to be Horowitz's for me) Danse Macabre
Scriabin No.9 Op.68 'Black Mass'
(This one is also bit lacking)
I was inspired by a concert about a year ago in Royal Festival Hall that was on a theme of the Prometheus Legend (Beethoven, Matthias Pintscher's 'Mar'eh', Liszt and Scriabin's Prometheus Symphony) Still the greatest musical experience I've ever had. If anyone has any lists, or pieces I could add to these lists, I'd be very happy to hear

Oh yes, I'm not very familiar with Prokofiev's works, but op.4 no.4 definitely suits the bill. Great piano piece
