Any tips regarding jumps in high tempo?
on: September 30, 2012, 11:52:03 PM
Link to score

Starting from the 9th measure after the signature changes to 3/4 on the second page, I can't quite manage the L.H. (without some mistakes) at ♩=162 no matter how much I practice.

EDIT: Also some tips on fingering wouldn't go amiss, I'm using what I felt most comfortable with:

1+5 3 2, 1 2 3, 2 1 2 and repeat.

Play the octaves with a more staccato touch to give you more time to move up to the quaver groups.

Your second tip makes sense, I already play the octaves as stacatto as possible.

And your first, you mean something like 1+5 4 3 , 2 3 4, 3 1 2? That feels really awkward to me plus 1-3 are stronger and so that way seemed best to me.

Yeah I misread your post and you must have caught me in an edit heheh.

Over using the thumb can be problematic though I'd look for alternatives.

Well I've tried so many things and this is the best fingering I've found for keeping up the tempo.

Can you go into more detail about overusing the thumb(s)?

If you like the thumb then Try 51 32134313. You must give the thumb less distance to move or you will get tense.

Have you listened to it performed? Just try to match how fast the pros play it, do not worry too much though.

I have noticed that a few of the pros don't play it quite at Chopin's intended tempo so maybe you're right that I shouldn't worry about it.

I can't quite manage the L.H. (without some mistakes) at ♩=162 no matter how much I practice.

You may already do this, but I would:

Practice the measures leaving out the lower note of the octaves.  So you would do: 1 3 2, 1 2 3, 2 1 2, etc.

Practice the measure leaving out the upper note of the octaves.  So would you practice 5 3 2, 1 2 3, 2 1 2, etc.

Practice as written.

Practice the note from the previous measure and the first four notes of the current measure.  So you would practice 2 5+1 3 2 1.  Do this for every measure applicable.

It's important you don't play faster than you can.  In other words, practice slowly with performance tempo in mind (don't do motions you can't do in performance tempo)

1+5 3 2, 1 2 3, 2 1 2 and repeat.

I generally use the same fingering.

I just tried this for literally 5 minutes then tried the actual measures and well it's amazing how much that helped even after only a short while. I shall start doing this.

I guess doing this is just further ingraining the proper movements into your muscle memory, correct?

That's good to hear!

I wouldn't say "further".  I would say you're ingraining the proper movements into your muscle memory in the first place.
