Amount of Exam Repertoire (RCM, Canada)?
on: October 04, 2012, 05:43:54 PM
The RCM syllabus for Grade One has a total of 103 pieces from which to select (24 in List A, 66 in List B, 13 in List C), and 13 studies. The Celebration Series books for Grade One contain 10 for List A, 19 for List B, and 7 for List C; and all 13 of the studies.

The exam requires one piece from each list, and one study.

On the one hand, I couldn't possibly think I was doing an adequate job if I had the student work on the minimum repertoire requirements necessary to play the exam. On the other hand, how much is too much?

At present, I use the Celebration Series to diminish the parents' expense for books, and aim to have the pupil work on 75-80% of the pieces in those books before the exam. Thus, 8 pieces in List A, 15 in List B, 5 in List C, and 10 studies. Is this too much, too little, or just right?

Why not make an assessment of the students technical ability in regard to the pedagogical concerns presented in the grade repertoire. - and move on when you feel the the student is ready, rather than when the student has completed a specific number of pieces.

EDIT:
And, if you are going to study more than the requirements of the exam - why limit yourself to the repertoire set out by the RCM? Especially if you are trying to limit parents expenditure on books - IMSLP (and others if you have a good dig around google) has a lot to offer for free. Here in Australia the AMEB allows the use of free-download scores in exams, simply stating that the onus is on the student to ensure there is no copyright infringement.

^not to say there's anything wrong with the repertoire or the amount of it presented by the RCM, but making your own judgments about what can be categorized as the same level can only help your understanding of the teaching components, and how to judge the students progress ..  and expand your repertoire knowledge..

For the IMSLP suggestion, I imagine that you suggest that the teacher exams any score from there to check that the version is acceptable in all ways?
