LRSM/LTCL repertoire advice
on: October 05, 2012, 06:19:05 PM
Hey guys, I'll preparing for my LTCL recital soon. And here is my program. I need some advice for those of you who have taken such diploma exams before.

My current program
Beethoven - Tempest Op 31 no 2
Liszt Concert Paraphrase Rigoletto
Messiaen Vingt Regards no 13 "Noel"

I think I'm barely hitting the 40+ minute requirement. But what do you guys think of this program? Is it balanced? I never really liked baroque pieces and the thought of starting the exam recital with Bach is quite frightening. (never played any p&f before!).

Any suggestions? I was contemplating between Tempest and Les Adeiux recently. But I decided to go for the former. I'm still open to suggestions and modifications though.

Thanks in advance =)

I don't think that it would really matter if you added Bach or not. Though it would definitely be lacking in a "complete" rep, the overall performance is by far more important. Why don't you ask your teacher for advice? He should be much more qualified to give advice to you compared to us, unknown people, on the internet.

I'm neither a teacher nor a professional, but by chance, I took LTCL last year.  100% self-learning, and luckily, a pass.

I think your programme is fine (and it meets the minimum playing time* as required), so as long as you are comfortable.  In this part of Asia, candidates usually play 3-4 pieces in their AT/LT exams.  And certainly, many candidates will go by periods in the programme sequence, i.e. baroque, classical, romantic, impressionist/20th century...  However, this is not necessary.  I played my LT in this sequence: Mozart, Prokofiev, Bach and Ravel.

* BTW, no long repeats in the exam as you know, but I have heard from some one that an examiner had stopped him to play even a short repeat.  So, better re-check your total playing time (if without repeats).

Good luck.
