Nice pieces for the cello?
on: October 14, 2004, 02:02:47 PM
I recently "discovered" this beautiful instrument...
What pieces can be recommended? What performers?
Is it "possible" learning to play the cello for a 20 year old?

Cello is probably a lot more difficult to get reasonably good at than the piano. I played cello for a year, but was immensely discouraged by lack of progress (I didn't have a teacher, nor do I own a cello, so that might've contributed to this lack of progress...  :P).

Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata is the most beautiful piece for cello, in my opinion, but it's also one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. The cello part is reasonable for a somewhat advanced player, but the piano part is more difficult than his second concerto in my opinion (I'm learning both, and have had much more difficulty with the sonata).

However, it would be best for you to find a teacher and ask these questions. I don't really know cello repertoiry all too well, 'though it is my favorite instrument besides the piano when played well.

Some of my favourites are Ravels "Piece en forme de habanera" and Gabriel Faure's "Elegie". I've played both with a cellist - the piano part is in no way advanced, and the cello part isn't the most demanding.

I like the two cello sonatas and concerto by Myaskovsky.

omg i want to learn the cello so i hope it's possible to learn at 20! cos that's about when i'll take it up- hopefully when i have money and time!
ok so i'm not very knowledgeable about cello pieces yet, i'm still working on that, but my fave at the moment, out of the very small repertoire i've listened to, is the prelude from bach's cello suite no1 i think. it's SO nice

Thx for the suggestions - i´m on my way to the library. As for learning to play, what is considered the major difficulties? Getting a good tone? Playing "in tune"? The fingering? Wow much must one expect to pay for a decent beginner cello?

My mom bought me a cello when I was 14 and said I had to learn it.  I never did!  Well she wouldn't let me have lessons (I couldn't get piano lessons either).  I was supposed to use magic to figure it out.  We still have the cello sitting around and I do want to learn.  I tell her I'm going to learn all the time now that's she wants to get rid of it!

J.S. Bachs cello stuies are amazing.

You can learn anything at any age. But it might not be a good idea to pick up cello. But maybe it is.

Try Arvo Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel". It is originally for violin and piano, but there is a version for Cello and piano.

Have a look here for more details:
