Danzas Argentinas - easy?
on: October 15, 2012, 08:37:12 AM
So, some 6 years after hearing Danzas Argentinas in a local music festival, I say to myself today - hey! Let's throw caution to the wind and print off some Ginastera to read at the piano. Thinking, of course, that I would sight read with some success through la danza de la moza donosa, then perhaps blunder awkwardly, painfully, and with much trepidation through parts of the outer dances. I mean, it's ARCT material, right? And I can't bloody well sight-read through ARCT level stuff, not whole pieces, anyway that's for sure.

I absolutely fell in love with the middle dance, and played through all of it, with pleasure - not too, too surprising, though I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Deciding to press my luck, I went ahead with the third dance. Much repetition, and I very quickly played through large sections, hands separately. The difficult rhythms were impossible if I played to fast, but if I slowed down and thought about it I managed it. Similar situation for the viejo boyero - played through the whole thing, slowly, hands together, in one sitting.

So, obviously, it's not like this work would really be put together in a satisfying way ever in the blink of an eye, but should I be so surprised at how easy it seemed? I'm really scared, if I continue practicing, will I discover some horrible thing that will make it nearly impossible to play well?

Thoughts? Tips on important aspects I might be missing? (I'm suspicious.)

If you want to find out......find someone who plays them and sit down and discuss the piece. Then get to work on those beautiful set of pieces!!!
