Hi!

If you haven't played the Pathetique Sonata.. that's a good one.  Also,  the third movement to the Moonlight Sonata is pretty hard.

The Tempest Sonata is a really good one, but very difficult.

Don't disregard his earlier Sonatas either.. they are all crazy hard.  I'd say,  listen to the full collection and pick one that you really like.  Just don't play the Hammerklavier.  It will kill you.
~ if you want to know what I'm working on.. just ask me!

Of moderate difficulty, and quite interesting, the Waldstein Sonata may be your new piece. Give yourself 3 months to master it.

So you are one of the technique guys. The Waldstein sonata is f-cking hard. Itīs just for the chosen ones, nobody can make it as interesting as it can be. With Hammerklavier and op. 110, it is one of the most insane sonatas.

Ya, lol.

The third movement of Waldstein has some ridiculous finger work that does not really come up in the earlier sonatas (obviously there are exceptions..); the fast octaves, constant trills, and just the size of the sonata comparatively...

If Waldstein is 'moderate', then does that mean that half of the Op 100+ ones are too?  If you are comparing to all other rep in general, then I guess it kind of is moderate?

---------

Go for the Tempest, or Op 78.  Both are really good!  Op 78 movement 1, the second theme is AMAZING; and the second movement is really unlike anything else in the 32 sonatas; such a unique, quirky piece...

Op 90 is good!
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

I would say that good starting sonatas are the earlier ones - Till opus 26 I would say + The op. 49 ones and letīs say op. 90 and op. 79
The Tempest sonata is very, very hard. Iīve kept it in my repeiroire for a few years and always think off something new. Even the biggest pianists often dont know what to play it about. There isnīt really plenty of notes, but it can exhaust you very quickly, especially the 2nd movement, which is so easy to get lost in.

Learn a WHOLE SONATA, not just a few mvts!

You mentioned you are learning Op. 2 no. 3. You should be ready to learn the hardest sonatas at this point.

Appassionata, Op. 10 No 3, Waldstein, Tempest, Hammerklavier, Op. 111, are just a few of the hardest.
