Hannikainen Piano Concerto
on: November 01, 2012, 03:57:17 PM
Hello again! Do you know where I could find Hannikainen's piano concerto, preferably for two pianos?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

I have got this and noted that it was published by Minerva.

Cannot remember where I got it from, not the FMIC and it is not listed at Gerhmans.

Will have to have a think.

Thanks thalergmad! If you can't remember, would you like to trade it for something else? I have recently discovered some obscure pieces by various composers that you may be interested in...

As soon as I have got a good connection I will check old chap.

Computer is all but useless at the moment and I cannot find my paper copy.

I am of course always interested in obscure piano concertos and other works for piano and orchestra.

Thanks thalbergmad! I will be waiting! Oh, and by the way I don't have obscure concerto sheet music, but other pieces for piano by obscure composers!

I've found a site, which I believe sells the piece and ships internationally: https://info.fi/tuote/hannikainen_ilmari/pianokonsertto_b_molli_op_7/9789525591132 I think it's a full score, not a two-piano arrangement,* but it's better than nothing.

The site is only in Finnish, so if anyone wants to order the concerto, they could try using Google Translate or the translate feature of Chrome-based web browsers.

Disclaimer: I don't speak Finnish and I've never ordered anything from that site, so I can't guarantee it'll work.

* (edit) It has 107 pages, I believe, but I don't know whether that's the size of a two-piano version or a full score.

Thank you very much outin! Are you Finnish? You know, I have a soft spot for Scandinavian music, there is nothing I have heard that hasn't moved me...  :)

Yes, I am Finnish but shamefully ignorant of Finnish piano music :)

I think I only have one single book of sheet music by Finnish composers...

I guess I should check the local library for some Finnish sheet music, might have this one too.

Well, at least you have some (Finnish) composers to be proud of. Me, on the other side...  :(

If you ever do get the sheet music, let us know if it's a full score or a two-piano arrangement. ;)

No composers where you come from?

Personally I can't see music as a national thing... In general I think I have lost any trace of patriotism that I may have had when I was less experienced with the world. It sometimes makes me an odd one around here. I really couldn't care less whether Finns win or loose in hockey games :)

It is a two piano arrangement. Or at least the one I have is.

Hello,
I'm the one who did the editing of the concerto and piano reduction. It is nice to hear that you are interested in this quite obscure but wonderful concerto. The two piano score should be now available from Fennica Gehrman www.fennicagehrman.fi. If you contact their office, they should be able to help you with this one. They also rent the orchestral material for performance.

I hope there will be more interest in this concerto. Hannikainen's concerto is actually one of the first ones in the genre written in Finland. I think there are only Konzertstück by Ernst Mielck and first three of Selim Palmgren's 5 piano concertos that were written earlier. And Hannikainen's is longest and most ambitious of them all, lasting about 35 minutes.

@Outin, a fine piano sonata by a great contemporary Finnish composer:

I heard one of his symphonies live, and it was magnificent.

Thanks for the link! I have heard some of his works, but not much for solo piano...he'll be on my long list of the more contemporary composers to listen to...maybe even play one day...

Yes, I am Greek, and I would be very surprised if anyone could name more than 3 Greek composers...  :(

It had its moments. Mostly I am only interested in piano music, don't like orchestral pieces that much (concertos are an exception). So if there's something of that sort, please do :)
