looking for an inexpensive clip on tray
on: November 10, 2012, 11:18:45 PM
Does this exist?

I've got tall freestanding lamps.   Like this....

Is there any kind of cheap clip-on, clamp-on tray/shelf/ledge for those?  Something under $20.

It doesn't have to be that strong.  All plastic would work fine.

I'm doubting, but I'll ask.  I looked around on Google, Amazon, and home repair stores.  No luck.

There are some ergonomic arms that are too expensive.  I found a mic quick lock, too expensive.  And I found a full clamp on music stand, too big.

Bob, this is exactly why duct tape was invented.  It now comes in different shades.  I couldn't survive without it.

Duct tape what then?

I'll have to redo all that when I move.

It doesn't have to look nice. It's just has to funtion, being a little shelf in this case.

Moving costs are prohibitive.  Sell the old lamp on Craigslist when you move and buy a new one, this time around, with a shelf!

p.s.  I have lots of duct tape left over from Hurricane Sandy.  I'll send it to you!  What shade would you prefer?

Bob, it's a very nice lamp; get a freestanding side table. Something in a nice wood.

It's that style of lamp.  Not that exact one in the pic.  Mine is a Walmart special.

There's about 1x1' of space where this lamp is and it's standing in that space.  No room for a shelf.  If I could attach something on the lamp it would make better use of the space.

I doubt anything cheap would really hold any weight on something like that, except for the duct tape. Unless you could find some rubber thing to use as a stopper and have a suitably formed tray. You might still need the duct tape though. Getting inventive and building something youself is the best way to go here. But be prepared to find your coffee on the floor when the prototype fails  ;D

EDIT:
There are a few options here to support the tray: Use friction, fix a support to the lamp pole, get support from the floor or get support from above by hanging the tray on something. Each one presents quite a challenge especially if the pole is made of metal. You also need to avoid anything that presents the risk of an electric shock or fire. So it's not an easy task, which is probably why you could not find anything cheap.
